The goings on

In addition to all the music, fashion, portrait and photojournalism work you see on this site, I also document a number of weddings every year. It's a pretty amazing experience as I'm working with people from all walks of life, whether it be co-workers and those I meet through the music and fashion industries to complete strangers who find me because they want something different for their big day. So I'm excited to tell you that these photographs are available for viewing at modernematrimony.com. I'm now the proud owner of two Web sites! In other news, many a concert and portrait photo has been taken and I will get to posting some recent stuff v. soon. I also just wrapped up photo shoots of Air Force One kicks (and owners) for the new Nike photo book coming out early next year...

The Georgia Straight's 11th annual Best of Vancouver issue is out. Which means another year of pulling six different bands together for two different photos in a matter of days. The owners of the Shebeen Whiskey House were kind enough to let us take over their great little spot in Gastown in the middle of the night (photo below this text). And the Raja Theatre people opened their closed-for-the-season doors to let us in on hours' notice for the other shoot. The Raja was once the home of the famed New York Theatre up until 10 years ago.

While there was no time to hang out on the front door stoop and eat ice cream while wearing tube socks and listening to the radio this summer, there were a great many photo shoots. Which, in my opinion, is a much better way to spend the time anyway.

I photographed a decent amount of outdoor shows these past months for the fine House of Blues people. Shows included: David Gray, The Raconteurs, Bright Eyes, Zavier Rudd, Jack Johnson, and Ben Harper. All were spectacular. There's something about being at a concert and being able to watch the sun set at the same time. Of course, there's something to be said for indoor shows as well. They've been equally entertaining even though that warm feeling on my back is a spilt beer and not the setting sun. AWT and Cat Power were spectacles but the prize for best local show goes to the two-piece blues/punk/what-have-you Treacherous Machete.

Speaking of local musicians, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Tamara Nile for her new promo package. I scouted several locations for the shoot and found an old, crusty Buick sitting in an empty lot. With the doors unlocked, to boot. In other promo-land news, I had a wonderful shoot with Pacifika for their upcoming CD and some of these photos will be posted soon.

I have also been writing for the Globe and Mail recently. Headlines of the bigger stories include: Wrangling a Live One (women who love cowboys); Love Him Tender (wives of Elvis impersonators); and What's behind an act of bravery?. Going back to photography, my photos of Nike sneaker guru Tinker Hatfield were published in The Wall Street Journal last week.

And, in September's UK Vogue is Katie Sketch (whom I've photographed on several different occasions including for the Georgia Straight cover of her band, The Organ). The Marc Jacobs it-chick is the subject of a fashion spread by photographer Corinne Day titled The Boys are Back in Town. V. cool.
